Jack Burns was an American writer, comedian, and actor best known for his work on television shows such as The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour and The Andy Griffith Show. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1933 and died in January 2020 at the age of 86.
Burns wrote and acted in several episodes of The Andy Griffith Show during the show's fifth and sixth seasons. He played Warren Ferguson, the replacement for Deputy Barney Fife. His character was known for his gullibility and clumsiness, which often led to humorous misunderstandings. Burns also co-wrote several episodes with fellow comedian Bruce Jay Friedman, including "The Witches Curse" and "The Haunted House."
Despite his contributions to the show, Burns' tenure on The Andy Griffith Show was short-lived. He left after two seasons due to creative differences with Griffith. Burns went on to have a successful career in television, film, and comedy, including writing for The Muppet Show and The Muppet Movie.
